Legendary singer Mary J. Blige is back in the studio, and this time, the music she’s creating might be her final studio album. In a recent interview with People, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul confirmed she’s working on new material, describing the experience as “fun” regardless of the outcome.

Blige, a powerhouse vocalist with 14 studio albums under her belt, spoke about her creative inspiration: “Love for myself, love for life, love for happiness, love for God, love for peace. Life is full of ups and downs, but you gotta roll with the punches because it’s precious.”

This upcoming project marks Blige’s 15th studio album, and she hints it may be her last. This news comes after Blige previously alluded to retirement in a 2022 interview with The Breakfast Club. Reflecting on her career, she expressed her gratitude: “Amazing. Something I never even dreamed more than I could hope for, more than I can dream for.” Blige went on to emphasize the importance of hard work and building a legacy, suggesting a potential future retirement.

While details are scarce, Dr. Dre confirmed working with Blige on her next project in February 2022. There haven’t been any further updates from either artist.

Blige’s most recent album, Good Morning Gorgeous, dropped in February 2022. The critically acclaimed project spawned hits like the title track and “Still Believe in Love,” both reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart.

With a new album on the horizon and her annual Strength of a Woman Festival approaching, Mary J. Blige continues to be a force in the music industry. Whether this is her final chapter or not, one thing is certain: her legacy as a musical icon is forever cemented.
