Laufey has returned with A Matter of Time, her third full-length release and the follow-up to 2023’s Grammy-winning Bewitched. The new album arrives through Vingolf Recordings and AWAL, marking another milestone in the career of the Icelandic-Chinese musician who has quickly become one of the most prominent voices in modern jazz-pop.
The project pairs Laufey with two producers. Spencer Stewart, a longtime collaborator from her previous albums, continues to shape her sound, while Aaron Dessner, known for his work with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, joins her creative circle for the first time.
Led by singles “Silver Lining” and “Tough Luck,” A Matter of Time builds on the foundations of jazz and classical influences that have defined her work while reaching for broader audiences. The album balances lush instrumentation with Laufey’s distinct vocal style, bridging traditional arrangements with contemporary production.
To celebrate the release, Laufey hosted Drop: Laufey – A Benefit Program at the Grammy Museum’s Ray Charles Terrace in Los Angeles. The performance included new material, personal reflections, and drew high-profile attendees, including Selena Gomez.
Her rapid rise has been one of the industry’s most-watched stories. A bidding war among major labels in 2023 ended with a global partnership with AWAL, allowing her to maintain ownership of her recordings. Since then, she has earned recognition on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and TIME’s Women of the Year lists, sold out world-class venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Royal Albert Hall, and performed with leading orchestras from Los Angeles to Beijing.
Raised between Iceland and the Washington, D.C. area, Laufey (full name Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir) grew up surrounded by classical musicians, drawing inspiration from figures such as Chopin, Liszt, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday. Beyond her own artistry, she founded The Laufey Foundation, which supports youth orchestras and young musicians worldwide.
With A Matter of Time, Laufey continues to establish herself as a rare figure able to honor jazz traditions while bringing them to new audiences.
