Mariah The Scientist has released her latest single, “Is It a Crime,” a collaboration with genre-bending singer Kali Uchis. The track arrives as the second official single from Mariah’s upcoming fourth studio album, Hearts Sold Separately, which is scheduled for release on August 22 via Epic Records.
Produced by Mat1k and Oliver Easton, “Is It a Crime” is a stripped-down R&B ballad centered on the complications of love when it’s lived out under public scrutiny. Mariah’s vocals open the song with a sense of raw vulnerability, detailing a relationship constantly questioned by outsiders. Uchis joins in on the second verse, adding a charismatic and confident response that turns the track into a two-sided emotional narrative.
The release follows the success of Mariah’s lead single “Burning Blue,” which recently earned a gold certification from the RIAA after surpassing 500,000 units sold in the U.S. The single debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the artist’s highest charting single to date, and climbed to No. 1 on both Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart and urban radio.

Kali Uchis, who lends her signature bilingual delivery and lush vocal stylings to the new track, recently released her album Sincerely in May. The project includes songs like “Sunshine & Rain…” and “ILYSMIH,” further cementing her status as one of pop and R&B’s most versatile voices. Uchis is set to launch The Sincerely Tour on August 14, with Thee Sacred Souls joining as special guests.
Hearts Sold Separately will serve as the follow-up to Mariah’s 2023 album To Be Eaten Alive, which featured appearances from Young Thug, Vory, and 21 Savage. With two singles now in rotation — one a breakout hit and the other a slower, more introspective cut — the album appears to be shaping up as a multifaceted look into Mariah’s artistic evolution.
