KIRBY brings Mississippi to life in full color on her new single “Thick n Country.” Teaming up with fellow Mississippi native Akeem Ali, the singer-songwriter delivers a bold celebration of Southern identity. The track is rich with groove and character, capturing the essence of backyard cookouts, family reunions, and humid summer nights.
Produced by Homer Steinweiss, the song leans into classic Southern funk while keeping its sound fresh and intimate. KIRBY’s vocals glide over thick basslines and warm instrumentation, painting vivid pictures with each lyric. She sings about being “thick and country” with pride, making it clear that this is not just a song — it is a statement. Akeem Ali joins in with a charismatic verse that brings another layer of Mississippi flavor to the mix.
What makes “Thick n Country” hit even harder is the heart behind it. KIRBY was inspired by a conversation with her friend Justin Hardiman, who pointed out how Mississippi is too often portrayed in black and white. She answers that by giving her home state a song that sounds alive with color. From the sticky heat of a Southern afternoon to the smell of smoke rising off a grill, the single is steeped in place and memory.
It follows June’s release of “The Man,” a powerful track dedicated to her father and the struggles of those still chasing the promise of the American Dream. Where “The Man” is intimate and reflective, “Thick n Country” is loose, joyful, and made for movement. Both songs offer a glimpse into KIRBY’s upcoming album, set to arrive later this summer. The new project is produced by Thomas Brenneck and follows her 2021 release Sis. He Wasn’t The One.
With these two songs, KIRBY is telling stories that are deeply personal and unmistakably Southern, and she is doing it in her own unapologetic voice.
