Pinch of Sol: What’s the most unexpected way that the song “Robbery” has impacted you personally since creating it?

Linnon Stylz: It keeps me on my toes when dealing with people, and it has opened my eyes, and now I can see I haven’t been blind since.

PoS: Is there a specific moment in the song that, when you listen back, hits you the hardest?

Linnon: Yes, ‘cuz my love for you was unconditional, but the love you had for me was so conditional.’

PoS: How did recording at Star Factory Studios impact the energy or sound of the track? What was special about that space?

Linnon: The energy and vibes are always on point at Star Factory, a very comfortable, relaxing setting. It’s a go-to for R&B artists. I’ve been recording there for years, and the engineers know my sound and are able to match my style, adding vocal production along the way. They’re with you every step along your creative process.

PoS: What was your reaction the first time you played “Robbery” for someone close to you?

Linnon: It wasn’t so much my reaction; it was their reaction, which was, “This is a hit! I smell a viral moment—drop this today.”

PoS: When you’re writing a song, do you focus more on the melody or the lyrics first, or does it vary with each track?

Linnon: I definitely focus on the melody, humming, etc., and let the lyrics form along the way.

PoS: What’s a part of the creative process that most fans wouldn’t realize takes up a lot of your time or energy?

Linnon: Well, I would say making sure the record is in the best shape possible. After I’m done, I have to listen and sit on it for a few days or weeks and make sure there aren’t any melodies or harmonies that are missing and that I don’t need to add anything. I’m pretty much a perfectionist and a handful to work with, but my engineers get me, so it works out.

PoS: How do the sounds of Detroit—its culture, its vibe—impact the way you make music?

Linnon: It’s Motown, and a lot of big names got their start here, and Detroit has been making its rise again, and I’m here bringing R&B back, showing people it’s still alive.

PoS: Who is an underrated artist that you think people need to listen to, and why?

Linnon: That Guy Linnon Stylz, because in due time the world will know he’s the Newkingofrnb.

PoS: If someone listens to “Robbery” and feels like you told their story, what would you want to say to them right now?

Linnon: I do it for people like you, and it’s my honor to have my story relate to yours, as we all have experienced this in some way, shape, or form. Let’s learn from it and keep it positive.
