What’s the message you want to share with your audience in “Danny?”
I want people to get the message to break free of people’s expectations of waiting on others, whether in a relationship or life in general. Break free of your expectations.
Is there a real-life love story connected to “Danny”?
There is. (laughs) It’s not mine, but someone I know’s past situation.
What made you connect “Danny” and Egypt and Egyptian queens?
To be honest, one day last year, my mom and I were discussing ideas, and she brought up me playing Cleopatra or Nefertiti along with some other characters for this video running through life’s love circles, and the Egypt theme just stuck best. I try not to think too hard about my ideas and just go with what I feel, and Egypt just felt right for this video.
We loved the reference to “Part-Time Lover” in the song. Are there any other hidden eggs we missed or references to your different songs?
Believe it or not, this was written before I wrote “Part Time Lover” and I didn’t even notice that I wrote that until my cousin brought it up to me. I must have manifested that in my dreams, lol. But I definitely think all my songs connect in some type of way.
“Danny” is a new step in your music; what next level will you explore?
I’ve been asked this a lot since the release of “Danny,” and I honestly can’t answer it. It puts too much pressure on me to think that way. All I know is I have to continue creating and continue to get better at whatever it is I’m trying to create or write.
Is there an exact song from Michael Jackson that inspired Danny or his music in general?
Although I do love Micheal Jackson, I didn’t write this song from any MJ Inspiration. When we created the music for the track, I just kept naturally humming this melody and within 5 minutes wrote the song. Sometimes, it just comes to you that way.
As a DIY musician, do you have any secrets for managing a crew?
Always be kind, grateful, and show your gratitude to those who are on your side trying to help you. We have to appreciate those who are for us. It will then show up in your art. Other than that, if you’re organized and have the vision, you can then share the vision with others and build on it
What’s something new you have learned during the shooting of “Danny?”
That everything is going to be ok, and go with it. Nothing is ever too big or small. Trust your instincts, and never think you can’t achieve your goal on your own.
How do you keep work and personal life separate when your family is part of the crew?
My family has been on this journey with me since I was a little girl, so they understand when I need to become all the different roles I have to play, and they are great at their roles as well. The best part about it is that we never take anything so seriously that it strips the fun from it.
Since you continue growing as an independent musician, what’s one piece of advice you would share with other musicians who want to start?
Start. Don’t look from left to right to see what everyone else is doing. When you run track, the first thing a coach will tell you is not to look at your opponent on either side, as it will slow you down. Focus. And enjoy the process. The climb is the best part. When you get to the top, there’s nothing left, so enjoy the process, the wins, the losses, the highs, and the lows. Always give God the glory
