UK-based Afrobeats sensation oSHAMO is making waves in the global music scene with his innovative blend of Afrobeat, fuji, hip-hop, and amapiano. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, oSHAMO moved to the UK in 2019, where his sound evolved into a multicultural fusion that bridges his Nigerian roots with international influences. Having gained widespread recognition through viral moments on TikTok and critical acclaim from outlets like BBC 1Xtra and Clash Magazine, oSHAMO’s debut EP First of My Kind is a bold statement of identity and artistry, showcasing his unique voice and genre-defying sound.
You moved from Nigeria to the UK in 2019. How did this transition influence your music and artistic identity?
Absolutely! My move in 2019 was a game changer. Back in Nigeria, I was all about Afrobeat, with just a sprinkle of American artists. But London’s multicultural vibes opened my ears and mind! Now, I dive into various genres, finding fresh ways to blend my sound for a global audience.
Growing up in Agege, Lagos, you were surrounded by fuji and Islamic music. Can you share how these influences shape your sound today?
Oh, for sure! Waking up each day to the vibrant sounds of fuji and Islamic music has embedded a sense of purpose in my artistry. Every note I sing resonates with the voices of those legendary pioneers who paved the way for me.
You gained traction through platforms like TikTok. How has social media shaped your career and helped you connect with your audience?
Social media, especially TikTok, has been a total game changer! It’s like this magical algorithm doing its thing, allowing talents like mine to shine. Consistency is key, and I’m so grateful for how effortlessly it promotes my music!
What was the vision behind your debut EP, First of My Kind? How does it reflect your personal and cultural journey?
My EP is a thrilling blend of fuji, hip-hop, and amapiano! Growing up in an Islamic setting where fuji is at the heart, I knew that whatever genre I explored, I wanted to share my cultural narrative and identity with the world.
Can you walk us through the decision-making process for the tracklist? What stories do you aim to tell with each song?
Absolutely! Let’s break it down.
“oSHA PIANO” – Born in March 2024 with the same producer behind “Life of the Party,” this track shines bright! The energy matched the joy I felt from the previous hit, and its unique blend of fuji, hip-hop, and amapiano reflects my artistic journey. The lyrics capture the confusion of finding my purpose as an artist – “Back in the days, I was young and felt like I was in a maze…”
“NOTORIOUS” – A club anthem that packs a punch! This one delves deep into themes of growth, passion, and the power of manifestation.
“I DO” – In December 2023, after vibing to legendary love songs, I crafted this catchy love track on an amapiano/afrobeat beat! In just a few hours, I poured my heart into it, and it came together perfectly!
“WON FEMO” – This track is like a personal manifesto, revealing who I am, my drive, and the influences that fuel my passion. It’s a deep dive into the heart of oSHAMO!
“ALASKA” – This song tackles the stereotypes surrounding Nigerians abroad, especially the common “japa” narrative. It brings to life the real stories of hard-working Nigerians striving to make their mark in foreign lands.
“VANISH” – Inspired by childhood favourites like Avatar, this feel-good track combines fun with meaningful lyrics that resonate universally!
“LIFE OF THE PARTY” – This one captures the thrill of stepping out as an introvert and enjoying the party scene for the first time. It’s my take on social life, showcasing how you can have an unforgettable time without a dime!
“I Do” is the focus track. What themes does this song explore?
This track dives deep into love, commitment, and the heartfelt emotions that go with them—perfectly encapsulating the excitement of new beginnings!
You mentioned music as a universal language that can bring people together. Can you elaborate on this idea and how it manifests in your work?
Absolutely! Music is a powerful force that breaks down barriers—it’s like a spiritual connection that energises the soul! Picture this: a vibrant gathering of people from all walks of life, coming together under the spell of a song. Some might groove to the melody, while others get lost in the rhythm or the lyrics. It doesn’t matter where they hail from; those shared moments ignite deep connections! I’ve witnessed this magic with my own tracks, especially “Life of the Party.” Even when some didn’t know the Yoruba lyrics, the joy and unity during my performances were electric!
How would you describe your identity as an artist now, compared to when you first started your music journey?
Being the first musician in my family was a wild ride! I was a bit lost at first, unsure of what my sound should embody in the music scene. But as I dove deeper into recording, I uncovered layers of myself and discovered my major influences. More importantly, I realised just how vibrant and dynamic the sounds of my homeland are! At first, I was a little shy, fearing that my unique sound wouldn’t fit in. But after receiving overwhelming love for tracks like “Life of the Party,” I embraced my role as a cultural bridge between Nigeria and the world, kicking things off with the UK. That’s why I named my EP ‘First of My Kind’ — I want listeners to explore our rich African roots alongside me!
What do you want listeners to take away from First of My Kind after hearing it for the first time?
oSHAMO’s story, oSHAMO’s sound, oSHAMO’s identity, & oSHAMO’s motivation. After this Ep everyone should know who I am, why i said i’m the first of my kind & and why they need to invest in my stock! Haha.
