Formerly a part of the R&B duo VanJess, Jessica Nwokike has stepped into the solo spotlight under the moniker AMAKA with the release of her debut EP titled Oasis.
The EP, consisting of six tracks, introduces listeners to AMAKA‘s unique musical journey. The collection includes previously revealed songs such as “Cruisin‘,” “Leave it Behind,” and the titular track “Oasis.” All of these tracks were skillfully produced by Kaytranada, who has also worked alongside VanJess in the past.
The lead single, “Cruisin‘,” holds profound personal significance for AMAKA. She disclosed its emotional inspiration detailing that the song was penned as a means to empower herself following her father’s passing in 2021. “Unfamiliar” portrays AMAKA’s desire to escape the judgment of others by swiftly exiting situations where she feels out of place or undervalued. The EP further showcases her emotional depth with the song “Hold Tight,” where she explores the theme of granting a second chance to a past love, despite lingering commitment issues.
In a heartwarming collaboration, AMAKA joins forces with her sister, Ivana Nwokike, to co-write the closing track, “Undercover.”
The concept of the EP Oasis centers around creating a shared space of positivity and self-confidence. she describes this oasis as a place that unites people through an invigorating vibe and energy, allowing them to immerse themselves in the music and emerge as their most empowered selves.
