R&B artist Miguel has joined forces with the genre-defying rapper Lil Yachty for their latest single titled “Number 9.” The track, co-produced by Miguel and Brook D’leau, delves into themes of embracing change and letting go of the past to make way for the new.

In the song, Miguel‘s soulful voice delivers a repeated verse, conveying sentiments of moving forward: “Break lights off in the distance, don’t follow me / And the sky came crawlin’ out beneath the waves / Crashin’ into the sun, ain’t no stoppin’ me / And when the checkered flags are waved / There’ll be no one else and nothing left of me.”

Lil Yachty makes a haunting appearance with his verse, rapping lines like “I am the grim reaper / I’m the streets sweeper / I am the nightmare dream-stalker.”

“Number 9” follows Miguel’s earlier single “Give It To Me,” which was released in April. Both tracks are set to be featured on his upcoming album, expected to drop in the fall under ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records. This album, which remains untitled for now, will follow his 2017 release War & Leisure, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album and another nomination for his single “Come Through and Chill” (Best R&B Song) at the 61st Grammy Awards.

Miguel’s musical endeavors extend beyond his mainstream releases. In 2019, he unveiled Te Lo Dijie (Told You So), his first Spanish-language EP. This EP featured reimagined versions of select tracks from War & Leisure.

While looking ahead to his upcoming album, Miguel is also enjoying the resurgence of his debut album era. His 2010 hit single “Sure Thing” has experienced a revival on TikTok, with millions of users creating videos using its audio. Additionally, the song is rapidly approaching one billion streams on Spotify, with 975 million streams at the time of publication. On the Billboard charts, the self-penned track reached its peak at No. 11 during the week of June 24, 2023.
