Montreal’s talented singer-songwriter Laye graced her fans with a new track, titled “unhappier“, which debuted on July 14, 2023. This fresh composition comes as a sequel to her previous release, “touching myself”, that hit the music scene in May.
The track’s creation is credited to Leah Darwent and Oscar Neidhardt, both of whom participated not only in the songwriting process but also in producing the record. The music video that perfectly encapsulates the song’s vibe was given life by directors Sandeep Vadlamudi and Chadrick Preuss.
Speaking about the new single, Laye commented, “unhappier is a song about heartbreak, but also about love,”. She expressed her wish for listeners to find solace in the commonality of feelings like jealousy and unhappiness, emphasizing that experiencing such emotions is a part of being human.
Laye further explained the song’s profound undertones, “This song was written for someone who is looking toward the end of a relationship, while still being in the relationship. It’s a breakup song written from the perspective of someone who really doesn’t wish that person well. At the root of it, though, it’s still a love song.” She then reflected on the intricate emotions humans are capable of, which are neither purely about love nor hatred, but a complex blend of both.
Sharing more about the process behind “unhappier“, she said, “Not every songwriting session clicks, but this one did right away.” She went on to discuss how this track brought her closer to her true sound, following a period of hiatus and experimentation after her 2019 album “lonesome”.
Laye elaborated, “I was focused on putting together the live show, something that could easily translate on a stage… When I wrote “unhappier,” I knew I had locked in on a sound that felt like me… “unhappier” has brought me closest to the sound I wanted to be making.”
This deeply resonant track is set to feature on her forthcoming EP. Overflowing with excitement, laye expressed on her social media, “This is such a surreal feeling!!! This song means so freaking much to me… this song helped shape so much of my upcoming project.”
With the release of “unhappier“, laye continues to redefine the narrative of love and heartbreak, crafting songs that resonate with listeners and represent the multifaceted nature of human emotions. Her eagerly anticipated EP is sure to follow suit, encapsulating more of this intriguing narrative and sound.
