The Weeknd surprised fans with a live debut of a brand new song during Metro Boomin’s Coachella set on Friday night (April 14) at the Sahara Tent.
With Metro’s approval and support from frequent collaborator Mike Dean, who played the saxophone, The Weeknd presented fans with a fresh track he had previously teased on Instagram. In the 17-second clip, he and Dean were in the studio working on an orchestral arrangement. The caption read, “THE IDOL VOL. 1. coming soon (double fantasy & jealous guy just a taste),” which led fans to speculate that the new song performed at Coachella could be titled “Double Fantasy.”
For the live premiere, Dean’s saxophone resonated powerfully through the Sahara Tent, as The Weeknd captivated the audience with his fluorescent, all-white outfit and mesmerizing light show. He sang, “Temperature rising, bodies united, now that I tried you in my arms. No need to fight it, no need to hide it, now that I’ve seen what’s in your heart.” The crowd was enthralled as his vocal runs synced perfectly with the electrifying synths.
Later in the performance, The Weeknd joined forces with Future for “Low Life,” a track from Future’s 2016 album EVOL. The excitement continued as the rest of Metro’s all-star lineup — 21 Savage and Diddy — assembled for the first live rendition of “Creepin.” This song, featured on the producer’s Billboard 200-topping album Heroes & Villains, is currently at No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart.
The memorable Coachella 2023 set not only showcased the incredible talents of Metro Boomin and his collaborators but also provided fans with an unforgettable first look at The Weeknd’s new music. With the promise of more to come from “THE IDOL VOL. 1,” anticipation is building for the release of the full project.
