R&B singer Estelle has joined forces with Harlem DJ and producer Austin Millz for his latest single, “Freeway.”
In the track, Estelle sings about her eagerness to be in her lover’s arms over a stutter-stop beat and rapid handclaps. She races down the highway in a convertible, convinced that the rush is worth it.
Millz expressed his excitement about working with Estelle on “Freeway,” saying, “Working with Estelle was an honor for me. I reached out to her a while back about working together and we finally made it happen. I played her the ‘Freeway’ beat in the beginning of the session and then we just loaded it up. She started writing, got in the booth, and as soon as she sang the first words, I knew we had something special.”
Estelle shared similar sentiments: “This song came about pretty naturally; we were literally on a freeway on the way to the studio when I came up with the hook… I’m happy to have walked into a beautiful track produced by Austin and walked out with a masterpiece.”
“Freeway” marks Millz’s second collaboration this year, following “Inhale / Exhale” with Sabrina Claudio. Both tracks will be featured on his upcoming EP, Breathwork, set to be released later this year via Ultra Records. Millz is preparing for his headlining Breathwork Tour, which starts at Bar Standard on April 27 in Denver, Colorado. Tickets are available now at austinmillz.live.
Estelle, the host of The Estelle Show on Apple Music, has kept quiet on the solo music front. Her last album, Lovers Rock, was released nearly five years ago, on Sept. 7, 2018. Inspired by her parents’ love story, the album included singles “Better” and “So Easy” featuring Luke James, with the latter peaking at No. 28 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. Lovers Rock debuted and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.
Since then, Estelle has released a one-off track (“Set Me On Fire”) and remained active through collaborations, including teaming up with Kaytranada and Robert Glasper for their respective albums.
