After taking over the industry with her sultry vocals and vintage style, fast-emerging singer-songwriter, cool girl island, returns with a new music video for her latest single “do not disturb” (airplane mode). Produced by the NY-based artist herself, the visuals, shot in a charming French village, are a sight to behold. Every frame is an impressionist painting that portrays the safe space and comfort one feels when alone at home.
Co-created with ALX112, the clips’s picturesque cinematography along with its superb art direction leaves a long lasting impact on the viewers. With its retro-infused imagery and visually pleasing shots, the poetic video features the ethereal cool girl island strolling around and enjoying the time dedicated to herself. Taking off all her masks and shutting down the outside world, she fully embodies who she is as a woman and as an individual.
The Electro-R&B track is “a reminder that we’re all good on our own. Like yes, it’s nice to have company, but if it comes at the expense of our sanity, let it go. I want more people to take themselves out on a date. It acts as a reminder that if you could treat yourself better than that potential partner, maybe you don’t need them after all. I am always an advocate of self-reliance,” admits the up-and-comer.
cool girl island reveals: “I wrote the song during the end of covid. Despite finally having “permission” to leave my house, I found myself wanting to stay in and craving my own company. The music I wrote became my melodic journal diary. Sometimes I would surprise myself when I listen back to the lyrics I wrote because I’m quite a private person. Most days it’s a feel-good, self-love kind of song, other days it makes me strangely sad…”
Having a knack for storytelling, she masterfully writes: “For you, I used up all my tissues/ But still I’ve got bigger issues/ “Calm down”/ Then made myself some tea (ooh)/ I think it’s time to let it go/ And I think it’s time for you to leave (leave).” The California native writes: “Now I crave only me at home/ No, I don’t crave you no more (no more)/ Please don’t call/ Phone’s on airplane mode/ No, I don’t crave you no more (no more).”
“do not disturb” (airplane mode) is the follow-up to the independent artist’s recent releases “inside (out)” and “forever stay never.” Describing her lullabies as “a lazy afternoon or 2am night-in by yourself,” cool girl island transmits powerful emotions onto her audience. Projecting “the feeling of floating on water,” she succeeds in arousing sweet melancholia, at the same time pushing listeners to rely only on themselves and stop looking for happiness in other people.
