Ella Mai’s track “DFMU” has surpassed Silk Sonic’s “Love’s Train” to take the #1 place on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay list.
Mai’s newest achievement, which earns her fourth No. 1, brings an end to the R&B duo’s ten-week reign.
“DFMU,” which Mai performed at the 2022 BET Awards, is her third-fastest rise to the top of this chart, following the chart-topping hits “Boo’d Up” and “Trip.” The Grammy-winning hit was number one for 12 weeks, while its successor was number one for 13 weeks.
Mai’s guest appearance on Usher’s “Don’t Waste My Time” took the longest to reach No. 1 in June 2020. It reached the top of the charts for the 25th time.
Mai’s “Not Another Love Song” came close to reaching the top floor in April 2021, but it was prevented by Silk Sonic’s instant classic “Leave The Door Open.”
“DFMU,” the second song from Mai’s album Heart On My Sleeve, has already received over 16.6 million Spotify listens since its January release.
On May 6, Mai published Heart On My Sleeve. In its first week, the follow-up to her self-titled album from 2018 debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums list. It also opened at No. 15 on the Billboard 200.
Recent promotional attempts for the new album included a performance at the 2022 BET Awards of three songs, including “How” with Roddy Rich. Mai and Babyface also made their debut with “Keeps On Fallin’.”
Mai will join Mary J. Blige on her Good Morning Gorgeous Tour later this fall. The tour begins on September 17 and ends on October 29.
In other music news, Mai features on Chris Brown’s upcoming album Breezy on the track “Sex Memories.”
“She’s one of the dopest vocalists,” Brown said about Mai to Big Boy. “She just understands the rhythm in R&B and how to sing. The song that we have…she named like six or seven songs that I’ve done but as metaphors within her verse.”
