“Heart On My Sleeve,” Grammy winner Ella Mai’s latest album, debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart this week. Her previous best was her self-titled debut album from 2018, which debuted at No. 1 and remained there for 11 weeks.
“Heart On My Sleeve” debuted at No. 9 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list. “Heart On My Sleeve” is her second top ten entry, following her 2018 debut. She has four projects on this list. In October 2018, the latter set debuted at No. 4 behind Lil Baby and Gunna’s Drip Harder.
“Heart On My Sleeve” debuts at No. 15 on the Billboard 200. This is a few points lower than her previous debut position, which Ella Mai had at No. 2.
With “DFMU,” Mai grabbed the top spot on the Adult R&B Airplay chart this month. The song, produced by Mustard and J. Holt, became her sixth top ten hits.
During a recent taping of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mai sang that radio hit as well as “Leave Me Alone.”
Early in the month, “Heart On My Sleeve” was released to critical acclaim. The album’s first song, “Not Another Love Song,” debuted in the fall of 2020 and was subsequently certified gold.
Mai enlisted the support of a few well-known faces to convey the narrative of “Heart On My Sleeve,” including Lucky Daye, Roddy Rich, and Latto. Throughout the song sequence, Mary J. Blige and Kirk Franklin made uncredited cameos.
Mai will perform as a support act for “Heart On My Sleeve” at the Strawberries & Creem Festival in June.
