On Tuesday, Barbados officially became a republic, ending 396 years of British Colonialism.
The Barbadians celebrated the birth of the new republic and bid farewell to the Queen. The ceremony took place in Bridgetown, where president Sandra Mason was sworn in as president.
Rihanna also attended the ceremony and was declared a National Hero. The star was honored by the Prime Minister, Mia Mottley. In her speech, the Prime Minister said: “On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you, the designee, for national hero of Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty, may you continue to shine like a diamond.”
Rihanna became the 11th person to receive the title of National Hero Of Barbados. The star mentioned how much this award meant everything to her. She added, “I’m so proud to be a Bajan. I’m gonna be a Bajan till the day I die. This is still the only place I’ve ever called home. I love Barbados. I love you guys and I pray that the youth continue to push Barbados forward.”
